The Magical Double: Meet the Other Self in Chaos Magick
Share
Who would you be if you were more confident?
More disciplined?
More creative?
More willing to take risks?
More capable of pursuing the things that matter to you?
Most of us carry a relatively stable idea of who we are.
We say:
“I'm not creative.”
“I'm not confident.”
“I've never been disciplined.”
“That's simply not who I am.”
But what if identity is less fixed than we imagine?
Chaos Magick provides an interesting environment for exploring this question because it has long encouraged experimentation not only with rituals and beliefs, but with identity itself.
One way of doing this is through the Magical Double — an imagined, symbolic or magical counterpart representing qualities and possibilities that may not yet be fully expressed in your everyday personality.
Instead of simply imagining becoming different, you give that possibility a form.
You meet it.
Observe it.
Question it.
And eventually ask:
What can I bring back?
What Is the Magical Double?
The idea of a double, counterpart or second self appears in many different traditions, stories and psychological concepts.
Folklore contains doppelgängers.
Esoteric traditions have described subtle or spiritual doubles.
Psychology provides concepts involving ideal selves, possible selves, archetypal identities and imagined future identities.
Modern visualisation practices often involve encounters with a future self.
These ideas shouldn't automatically be treated as identical.
Within our Advanced Chaos Magick practice, the Magical Double has a specific function.
It is a deliberately constructed or encountered symbolic version of yourself representing potential.
You don't need to assume that an independently existing supernatural duplicate of you objectively exists.
The Double can be explored as:
- an imaginal figure
- an archetypal identity
- a possible future self
- a magical persona
- a symbolic representation of undeveloped qualities
- an altered-state visualisation
Chaos Magick allows you to experiment with the model without demanding certainty about its metaphysics.
Why Create Another Version of Yourself?
Imagine you want to become more confident.
You could repeatedly tell yourself:
“I am confident.”
But perhaps you don't believe it.
The statement conflicts with your existing identity.
Now try something different.
Imagine another version of yourself.
This person is recognisably you.
But they possess the confidence you want to develop.
How do they stand?
How do they speak?
What do they wear?
How do they enter a room?
How do they respond when challenged?
What decisions do they make?
Suddenly, confidence is no longer an abstract word.
It has become behaviour embodied by a character.
The Magical Double gives possibility a face.
Identity as a Magical Variable
Chaos Magick frequently treats belief as something that can be explored experimentally.
The same principle can be applied to identity.
Instead of assuming:
“This is who I am.”
try:
“This is the identity I currently inhabit.”
That subtle change opens interesting possibilities.
It doesn't mean personality can be transformed instantly or that real-world limitations disappear.
It means some aspects of identity can potentially be examined rather than simply accepted.
You can ask:
Which parts of my identity are genuinely important to me?
Which are habits?
Which came from other people's expectations?
Which descriptions of myself have I never questioned?
Which qualities might I deliberately cultivate?
The Magical Double turns these questions into an experiential practice.
Creating Your Magical Double
You can begin with a simple exercise.
Choose somewhere quiet.
Take several slow breaths.
Then imagine standing in front of a large mirror.
Look at your reflection.
Don't try to change anything initially.
Observe.
Now imagine the reflection gradually changing.
Not physically, necessarily.
Something in the presence changes.
The figure becomes the version of you who has developed a quality you currently want to strengthen.
Perhaps:
confidence
creativity
discipline
curiosity
focus
courage
independence
wisdom
Let the figure emerge.
Don't over-control the imagery.
See what your imagination produces.
Step 1: Observe the Double
Before asking questions, observe.
How does your Double stand?
What expression do they have?
How do they move?
What feels different?
What feels familiar?
Notice small details.
Perhaps the most significant difference isn't something dramatic.
Maybe they simply appear calmer.
Or more decisive.
Perhaps they maintain eye contact.
Maybe they seem less concerned about other people's approval.
These details can be more useful than spectacular magical imagery.
Step 2: Ask What Changed
Now ask your Double:
“What did you learn that I haven't learned yet?”
Wait.
Don't force the answer.
A sentence may appear.
An image.
A memory.
A symbolic object.
Or nothing at all.
Remember that visualisation experiences vary enormously between people.
The objective isn't to receive an infallible supernatural revelation.
Treat whatever appears as material for reflection.
Step 3: Ask What You Need to Stop Doing
This can be more revealing than asking what you need to start doing.
Ask:
“What did you stop doing to become this version of me?”
Perhaps the answer concerns:
procrastination,
seeking approval,
abandoning projects,
avoiding difficult conversations,
overthinking,
or endlessly preparing without acting.
Again, don't automatically treat the answer as mystical wisdom.
Evaluate it afterwards.
Does it make sense?
Step 4: Ask for One Quality
Don't attempt to absorb an entirely new personality.
Choose one quality.
Suppose your Double represents:
confidence,
creativity,
discipline,
focus,
courage,
and independence.
Select one.
Perhaps:
discipline.
Now ask:
“How would I recognise this quality in everyday behaviour?”
The answer should ideally become practical.
Not:
“I possess infinite magical discipline.”
But:
“I finish the work I planned before starting something else.”
That is testable.
Step 5: Symbolically Integrate the Quality
Now imagine your Double giving you something representing the quality.
Perhaps:
a flame,
a key,
a symbol,
a piece of clothing,
a sigil,
a ring,
a book,
or simply light.
Accept the object.
Imagine it becoming part of you.
This creates a symbolic transition:
Observation → Selection → Integration
Then end the visualisation.
Step 6: Immediately Take Action
This is the part that matters most.
Ask:
“What would my Double do next?”
Then do something small that expresses the selected quality.
If the Double represents confidence:
send the message.
If the Double represents creativity:
write the first page.
If they represent discipline:
complete the task.
If they represent curiosity:
investigate the question.
If they represent independence:
make the decision you've been avoiding.
The ritual becomes much more useful when the imagined identity produces observable behaviour.
The Magical Double and the Future Self
The Magical Double has obvious similarities with future-self visualisation.
Imagine yourself:
one year from now,
five years from now,
or after completing an important objective.
Then ask:
What does that version of me do differently?
But there is a useful distinction.
Your Magical Double doesn't necessarily need to exist in the future.
It can exist symbolically now.
The exercise isn't:
“Someday I will become this person.”
It can instead become:
“What aspect of this identity can I practise today?”
That makes the Double more immediate.
The Magical Double and the Magical Self
These two Advanced Chaos Magick practices are related but serve different purposes.
Invocation of the Magical Self
The Magical Self is an identity deliberately entered for magical practice.
You might associate it with:
focus,
authority,
ritual confidence,
symbolism,
and the transition from ordinary consciousness into magical work.
The Magical Double
The Double represents another possibility of self.
It allows you to encounter qualities or paths not yet fully integrated into your ordinary identity.
The Magical Self asks:
“Who am I when I practise magick?”
The Magical Double asks:
“Who else might I be capable of becoming?”
Together, the two practices create a broader exploration of identity.
The Magical Double and Shadow Work
There is another possibility.
Your Double may not appear exactly as expected.
Perhaps you want to meet a powerful, confident version of yourself.
Instead, the figure seems angry.
Or frightened.
Or sad.
Or unwilling to cooperate.
Don't automatically dismiss this as a failed visualisation.
Ask what the imagery might symbolically represent.
Perhaps the quality you want has associations you haven't examined.
Confidence may be associated with arrogance.
Success may be associated with pressure.
Independence may be associated with isolation.
Power may be associated with responsibility.
This creates a natural connection with the Chaos Magick Shadow Journey.
The Double can reveal not only desired qualities but conflicting feelings about becoming the person you imagine.
The Magical Double and the Chaos Temple
If you have already constructed an inner Chaos Temple, the Magical Double can become part of that environment.
Perhaps there is a chamber containing a mirror.
Or a doorway that only the Double can open.
Maybe the Double waits in the temple library.
This helps connect individual guided experiences into one coherent symbolic system.
Over time, your inner environment can contain:
the Gnosis Chamber,
the Chaosphere,
your personal magical symbols,
the Magical Self,
and the Magical Double.
The separate practices begin forming an integrated personal system.
Create a Magical Double Sigil
Another experiment is to create a sigil representing the quality associated with your Double.
Suppose the selected quality is:
“I act decisively.”
Create a sigil.
During the Magical Double visualisation, imagine the symbol appearing on the Double.
At the moment of integration, imagine the symbol transferring to you.
Then use the sigil during future practice.
This links:
identity work → visualisation → sigil magick → practical behaviour.
Keep a Magical Double Journal
After each encounter, record:
Date
Quality explored
Appearance of the Double
Behaviour
What they said or showed
Symbol received
Unexpected imagery
Practical action selected
Action completed
What happened afterwards
After several sessions, compare the entries.
Do certain qualities recur?
Does the Double change?
Do the practical actions become easier?
Does the exercise produce useful insights?
Or does it simply generate interesting imagery without affecting anything outside the meditation?
Both outcomes are worth recording.
Don't Turn the Double Into an Authority
This is an important boundary.
If your imagined Double tells you something during visualisation, don't automatically assume it possesses special knowledge.
Treat its statements as you would material from a dream.
Interesting?
Possibly.
Symbolically useful?
Perhaps.
Infallible?
No.
If your Double appears to tell you to make a major financial, medical or life decision, evaluate that decision through ordinary evidence and judgement.
The purpose of the exercise is exploration.
Not surrendering responsibility to an imagined figure.
Magical, Psychological or Archetypal?
There are several ways to interpret the Magical Double.
Magical Model
The Double may be interpreted as an aspect of magical identity encountered through altered consciousness.
Psychological Model
The Double externalises desired qualities, making them easier to examine and rehearse.
Archetypal Model
The Double represents an idealised or symbolic pattern of identity.
Future-Self Model
The Double represents a possible version of you created through future visualisation.
Sceptical Model
The entire experience is imagination.
Even then, the question remains:
Can deliberately imagining another identity influence real behaviour?
That is something you can test.
A Seven-Day Magical Double Experiment
Try this:
Day 1
Perform the Magical Double visualisation.
Choose one quality.
Day 2
Perform one action expressing that quality.
Day 3
Repeat.
Day 4
Notice resistance.
When did your ordinary identity say:
“That's not me”?
Day 5
Act as the Double would act in one safe situation.
Day 6
Repeat the visualisation.
Has the Double changed?
Day 7
Review your journal.
Then ask:
Did anything actually change?
Not:
“Did I have an amazing meditation?”
But:
“Did I behave differently?”
That is the more interesting measure.
Experience The Magical Double
The Magical Double is a 30–40 minute guided Advanced Chaos Magick audio ritual designed to develop these ideas into an immersive experience.
During the journey you will be guided to:
- relax and enter focused awareness
- enter a symbolic inner environment
- approach a threshold between identities
- encounter your Magical Double
- observe their qualities
- communicate symbolically with them
- explore alternative possibilities
- select a quality for integration
- return with a practical intention
- record and evaluate the experience
The recording provides the structure.
Your imagination creates the encounter.
Your behaviour afterwards provides the experiment.
Part of the Advanced Chaos Magick Training Program
The Magical Double is one of 15 guided meditations, rituals and practical experiences created to accompany the Advanced Chaos Magick book.
Together they form the Advanced Chaos Magick Training Package from LLH Media.
The programme explores:
Deep Gnosis • Reality Tunnel Shifting • Advanced Sigil Charging • Sigil Shoaling • Chaosphere Empowerment • Invocation of the Magical Self • Probability and Possibility • Paradigm Shifting • Personal Magical System Creation • Advanced Chaos Temple Construction • The Magical Double • Synchronicity and Opportunity • Magical Release • Shadow Work • Advanced Daily Practice
By the time you reach the Magical Double, you have already explored several important ideas.
You have experimented with belief.
You have explored different reality tunnels.
You have begun constructing a personal magical system.
You have developed an inner Chaos Temple.
Now the experiment turns toward the person performing the magick.
What if the practitioner is also a variable?
Meet the Other Self
The most interesting part of the Magical Double isn't necessarily what happens during the meditation.
It is what happens afterwards.
Perhaps you meet a more confident version of yourself.
Then tomorrow you speak more confidently.
Perhaps the Double represents creativity.
Then you finally begin the project.
Perhaps the Double represents discipline.
Then you finish something you've repeatedly abandoned.
The ritual cannot guarantee any of those outcomes.
But it can create a structured experiment in identity.
Meet another version of yourself.
Observe them carefully.
Choose one quality worth exploring.
Bring it back.
Then test it in ordinary life.
Meet the possibility.
Integrate the quality.
Live the experiment.
